The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell, had me curious to learn more about various religions. As a Catholic, I always had questions. Some stories didn’t marry up? Many faiths and diety’s have rituals and beliefs linked us to a greater being. Some outside, and some within. Through this focus. I stumbled across IFA. A spiritual practice based on Yoruba culture. This led my curiosity to a sit-down read with a local in the Byron Shire, which in turn ended up being one of the most profound reads. Basically, a stranger, his inquiry into who I am, fleshed out many traits I employ, as well as what dreams and ideas I had on the horizon. This led me to enquire and seek more about this spiritual practice. One of the first steps in our spiritual journey is the relationship with an orisha, Egun. I set up an ancestor altar to faithfully make offerings and discuss my happenings, wishes and dreams. The IFA practice says all too often, that through lack of knowledge from our elders, we tend to neglect them and our surroundings, all through lack of communication. This door to ancestor communication usually stays shut. Not because of anything we have done, but really due to what we have not done. We need to open the door into that realm. Know and trust, without fear, communication with our ancestors… not just a one-way monologue, but that two-way dialogue, that lets you have a vehicle for knowledge, healing, and informed advice from our long-forgotten ancestors. Welcome them, the words. Our ancestors walk with us; don’t lose the opportunity to receive a communication. These are a must for anyone doing or wishing to communicate with the other side.
